During an event, the speaker usually repeats and reinforces the main idea or theme of the event. In public speaking, the word “keynote” refers to the main and underlying topic of a larger idea, which is why keynote speaker topics are usually related to the topic of the meeting.

A speaker and his speech are often chosen to generate interest in an event, such as a conference or large meeting sponsored by a company or association, and thus attract attendees.

By choosing a speaker known for his expertise in the field or whose name is known through other achievements, you will generate interest among potential meeting or conference attendees. In this case, that speaker must be able to capture the essence of the meeting topic and bring it out to your audience in no time.

The moderator is usually used as the first or last speaker at events. If speaking as the first speech, the host usually sets the mood for the occasion and connects the main topic of the event. If speaking at the conclusion of the event, the speaker has the best chance of influencing the final mood of the audience and their inspiration for the event. If the event lasts several days, it is preferable that each day has its own speakers.

During the process of choosing a speaker, it is important that the meeting organizer and the speaker’s representative discuss and agree on the specific objectives of the intervention. A good speaker rep knows what questions to ask to find out whether or not the speaker is a good fit for the event. The most important thing is to make sure the audience is going to be fully engaged. In addition, when looking for the right profile, it is important to consider the following:

– Does this person have expertise, something new and unique to offer the public? Does the speaker have what it takes to inspire attendees?

– Does this person have experience with the theme and intent of your event?

– Does this person have the experience to deliver interesting and professional speeches

Please note that there are speakers on multiple topics, but many speakers are able to tailor their talk to multiple topics.

Tom Pöysti – What is a speaker and what is speech for?

The speaker is a provocateur, an inspirer, a questioner and a thought stimulator.

Speech is a means of communication: drama, lecture, small talk, talking alone, thinking out loud, and talking nonsense, to name a few forms of speech. The spoken word has been an impressive means of influence in the world, for better or for worse. By talking we make peace, and by talking we try to prevent wars and hatred. The paradox is that often it is the speeches that arouse anger and aggressiveness, even provoking wars. In this case, poor speech and communication skills are replaced by force and weapons with shocking consequences.

I fear that precisely on this historically beaten ground, oral skills are used only for innuendo and suggestive accusations. These are called “hate speech”, although they are often used for stupidity and power propaganda. Well-formed thought and stimulating expression activate the listener’s judgment and wise questioning.

I believe laughter is a good sign of understanding. That’s why I provoke through comedy and satire. Laughter is often an expression of insight. A conflict is not necessarily a “dispute”, but the manifestation of a different point of view. I am interested in the possibility of talking about the same things with speakers who have different opinions. The opportunity to get on the “tatami mat” as a duo or even a trio is tempting. If well prepared, it could be a new form of listener activation.

Sir David Attenborough is perhaps my biggest favourite. An enthusiastic childlike man who likes to tell stories and lets his thoughts run wild in a personal way. His way of speaking had a huge impact on our view of the world. Maija-Riitta Ollila’s lectures are a symphony of thought. Extremely precise expressions, polished language and a provocative presentation keep the listener engaged from beginning to end. A very inspiring speaker in Finland.
